Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀫𑀸𑀤𑀸 (mādā), from Sanskrit मातृ (mātṛ, “mother”), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *máHtā, from Proto-Indo-European *méh₂tēr. Doublet of माता (mātā), a tatsama. Compare Punjabi ਮਾਂ (mā̃), Gujarati મા (mā), માં (mā̃), Bengali মা (ma), Assamese মা (ma), Oriya ମା (ma), Marathi माय (māy), Konkani मांय (mā̃y).
