From Proto-Indo-Aryan *ráwćati, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ráwčati, from Proto-Indo-European *lewk- (white, light, bright). Cognate with Avestan 𐬭𐬀𐬊𐬗𐬀𐬥𐬙- (raocant-, shining), 𐬭𐬀𐬊𐬗𐬀𐬵‎ (raocah‎, light), Ancient Greek λευκός (leukós), Latin lūx, Old English lēoht (whence English light).
