From Proto-Indo-European *ḱerh₂- (to break). Cognate with Avestan 𐬀𐬯𐬀𐬭𐬆𐬙𐬀 (asarəta, unbroken), 𐬯𐬀𐬭𐬌 (sari, piece, fragment), Ancient Greek κεραΐζω (keraḯzō, I tear, destroy), ακέραιος (akéraios, whole, intact), Old Irish do·cer (he fell), Tocharian B kärnau (disabled).
