From কাট (kat, cut) +‎ -আ (-a, causative suffix), ultimately from Sanskrit কৰ্ততি (kartati, to cut). Cognate with Bengali কাটা (kaṭa) Sylheti ꠇꠣꠐꠣ (xaṭa).
