Etymology

    Inherited from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀔𑁄𑀚𑁆𑀚𑀢𑀺 (*khojjati), denominal verb from *𑀔𑁄𑀚𑁆𑀚 (*khojja, footprint), possibly from Sanskrit क्षोद्य (kṣodya, (that which is) to be trampled or stepped upon), from क्षुद् (kṣud, crush) + -य (-ya).

    Cognate with Bengali খোঁজা (khō̃ja, to search), Odia ଖୋଜିବା (khojibā, to search), Hindustani کھوجنا / खोजना (khojnā, to search), Sylheti ꠈꠥꠎꠣꠘꠤ (kúzani, to search)
