[edit]Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀉𑀝𑁆𑀝 (uṭṭa), from Sanskrit उष्ट्र (úṣṭra, “camel”), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *úštras. Doublet of શુતર (śutar) and ઉષ્ટ્ર (uṣṭra). Cognate with Assamese উট (ut), Bengali উট (uṭ), Hindustani اونٹ / ऊँट (ū̃ṭ), Kachchi ઔટ્ઠ (auṭṭh), Kashmiri ووٗنٛٹ (vūnṭ), Odia ଓଟ (oṭa), Punjabi اُوٹھ (ūṭh), Sindhi اُٺُ (uṭhu), and Sinhalese ඔටුවා (oṭuwā). Iranian cognates include Baluchi اشتر (uštar), Pashto اوښ (ux̌), and Persian شتر (šotor).
