[edit]From Sanskrit पट्ट (paṭṭa, “cloth, woven silk”). Cognate with Malayalam പട്ട് (paṭṭŭ), Tamil பட்டு (paṭṭu) and Dhivehi ފަށި (faṣi, “silk”).
