From Old Khmer តម្រ្វច (tamrvac), តម្រ្វាច (tamrvāc), តំរ្វច (taṃrvac), តំរ្វាច (taṃrvāc), តំម្រ្វច (taṃmrvac), តំម្រ្វាច (taṃmrvāc, inspection, regulation; inspector, regulator; etc), extended forms of Old Khmer ត្រ្វច (trvac), ត្រ្វាច (trvāc, to examine; to inspect; etc), from which Thai ตรวจ (dtrùuat) is derived. Cognate with Modern Khmer តម្រួត (tɑmruət); Lao ຕຳຫຼວດ (tam lūat).
