From Old Khmer palãta (“assistant chief; deputy chief”) or Angkorian Old Khmer phlās, plass (idem). Cognate with Modern Khmer បាឡាត់ (baalat), បាល័ត (baalat), បាល័ដ្ឋ (baalat).
