Verb[edit]

ปิ้ง (bpîng) (abstract noun การปิ้ง)

  1. to cook by direct exposure to fire or heat: to grill, to barbecue, to roast, to toast, to broil, etc.

Usage notes[edit]

  • According to the Royal Institute Dictionary 2011, the present term ปิ้ง (bpîng) is used for dried things or things which would take not much time to cook, whilst the term ย่าง (yâang) is used for raw things or things that would take much time to cook. In actual usage, both terms are used interchangeably. They also form a compound, ปิ้งย่าง (bpîng-yâang), which covers any kind of thing to be cooked.
  • Moreover, some grilled foods appear to be given the term เผา (pǎo) rather than ปิ้ง (bpîng) or ย่าง (yâang). For example, grilled shrimps are called กุ้งเผา (gûng-pǎo), not กุ้งปิ้ง (gûng-bpîng) or กุ้งย่าง (gûng-yâang).
  • If an oven is used, the term อบ (òp) is preferred.
