Etymology

[edit]

From มหา (má-hǎa, great; high) +‎ วิทยาลัย (wít-tá-yaa-lai, college, literally abode of knowledge); ultimately from Sanskrit महाविद्यालय (mahāvidyālaya, literally great house of knowledge), from महा (mahā, great; high) + विद्यालय (vidyālaya, academy; school, literally house of knowledge). Cognate with Khmer មហាវិទ្យាល័យ (mɔɔhaavɨtyiəlay); Lao ມະຫາວິທະຍາໄລ (ma hā wi tha nyā lai).
