[edit]From Old Khmer chley, chlœya (“to answer; to reply; to respond; etc”). Compare Modern Khmer ឆ្លើយ (chlaəy), extended as ចំឡើយ (cɑmlaəy, “answer; reply; response”), from which Thai จำเลย (jam-ləəi, “defendant”) was derived.
