Etymology

[edit]

Inherited from Proto-Southwestern Tai *petᴰˢ² (duck), from Proto-Tai *pitᴰ (duck).[1] The vowel of เป็ด [pet̚ᴰˢ¹] shows irregularity as a reflex of Proto-Tai *pitᴰ. Such reflexes in Southwestern Tai such as Thai and many Central Tai dialects suggest that this etymon might in fact be a post-Proto-Tai loan.[2] The unaspirated /p-/ indicates an early date of borrowing.[2]

In Southwestern Tai, cognate with Northern Thai ᨸᩮᩢ᩠ᨯ, Isan เป็ด, Lao ເປັດ (pet), Khün ᨸᩮ᩠ᨯ, ᦵᦔᧆ (ṗed), Tai Dam ꪹꪜꪸꪒ, Shan ပဵတ်း (páet), Tai Nüa ᥙᥥᥖᥱ (pět), Ahom 𑜆𑜢𑜄𑜫 (pit).

In Central Tai, cognate with Nong Zhuang bet (Guangnan dialect)[3] or baet (Yanshan dialect)[3] or byet.

In Northern Tai, cognate with Saek ปิ๊ด, Zhuang bit, Bouyei bidt.

In other Tai, cognate with Zuojiang Zhuang bwt (Chongzuo and Ningming dialects)[3] or bit (Longzhou dialect)[3] or bet (Daxin dialect).[3]

Compare Old Chinese (OC *pʰid), Proto-Be *ɓitᴰ¹.
