Etymology

This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.
Particularly: “Not given etymology by STEDT (kruik "love, like, approve"), and Luce 1981 doesn't cover -ik finals. Vague resemblance to Old Chinese (OC *qʰaŋʔ, “to enjoy, receive; to offer to a superior”). As an -uik final word, this is likely to be a Mon borrowing, per Hill 2019. MED considers the "while" sense etymologically related; if it is the case, it can be compared with Burmese ခိုက် (hkuik, while). Compare also (OC *qʰlɯʔ, “to enjoy”).”

In traditional Burmese philology, ကြိုက် ,together with its variant ခြိုက်, was considered to be a phono-semantic allofam of Burmese ကြင် (krang), Burmese ခင် (hkang), and Burmese ချစ် (hkyac).[1]
