Etymology

According to Diakonoff, derived by metathesis from the name of the country called 𒆳𒋢𒄭 (/⁠Suḫmu⁠/) in Akkadian and 𒆳𒌷𒍪𒌋𒄴𒈠 (/⁠Zūḫma⁠/) in Hittite. It was located in the upper Euphrates valley, i.e. close to South-Caucasian tribes, and was at some time inhabited by Proto-Armenians. Cognate with Laz სუმეხი (sumexi).

     და ცოლად მისა იყო ასული ვარდანისი, სომეხთა სპაჲპეტისაჲ, რომლისათჳს ესე მივწერე თქუენდა, მამისაგან სახელით ვარდან, და სიყუარულით სახელი მისი შუშანიკ, მოშიში ღმრთისაჲ, ვითარცა-იგი ვთქუთ, სიყრმითგან თჳსით.

     da colad misa iq̇o asuli vardanisi, somexta sṗayṗeṭisay, romlisatwis ese mivc̣ere tkuenda, mamisagan saxelit vardan, da siq̇uarulit saxeli misi šušaniḳ, mošiši ɣmrtisay, vitarca-igi vtkut, siq̇rmitgan twisit.
