From Middle Khmer សុភា (subhā), សូភា (sūbhā, court; court of justice; member of a court: justice, judge), ultimately from Pali sabhā (assembly; congregation; convention) or Sanskrit सभा (sabhā, assembly; meeting). Doublet of សភា (saʼphiə). Cognate with Thai สภา (sà-paa), สุภา (sù-paa).
