Ancient Greek[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Unknown. Previously explained as ἀνα- (ana-, up) + a root noun belonging to τεύχω (teúkhō, to make, do), but this is highly questionable. The word resembles ἄμπυξ (ámpux) and καταῖτυξ (kataîtux), both without etymology.
