Ancient Greek
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Indo-European *h₂yu-gʷih₃- (“long life”) or Proto-Indo-European *h₁su-gʷih₃- (“good life”) with -ής (-ḗs, “adjective suffix”); the former derivation is favored by Beekes and Weiss. In that case, cognate with Latin iūgis, Avestan 𐬫𐬀𐬎𐬎𐬀𐬈𐬘𐬍 (yauuaejī), Proto-Germanic *aiwukiz.[1]
