Etymology[edit]

Possibly from (tana-, seed) +‎ (-tu-, ancient genitive particle) +‎ (mo2no2, thing).[1]

Noun[edit]

たなつもの (*TANATUMO2NO2)

  1. a seed of a rice plant
    • 720, Nihon Shoki:
      粟稗麥豆爲陸田種子、以稻爲水田種子
So she made the millet, the panic, the wheat, and the beans the seed for the dry fields, and the rice she made the seed for the water-fields.
  2. five grains

Reconstruction notes[edit]

This word is not phonetically attested proper in Old Japanese; it is attested to glosses in the Nihon Shoki. This reading may be further strengthened by the Wamyō Rujishō of 934, which records the readings of 水田種子 as 太奈都毛乃 (tana tu mono2), and 陸田種子 as 波多介豆毛乃.[1]
