Etymology[edit]

From (jieut) + additional horizontal line representing burst of aspiration.

Symbol[edit]

‎(ch, McCune-Reischauer: ch')

  1. 치읓 (chieut), a jamo (letter) of the alphabet of the Korean writing system, hangeul.

Usage notes[edit]

  • In the North Korean order, it is the tenth jamo. In the South Korean order, it is the fifteenth.
  • ㅊ (chieut) is pronounced as an aspirated alveolo-palatal affricate ([t͡ɕʰ]), i.e. similar to the English ch.
