Etymology
[edit]The kanji spelling is an example of ateji (当て字), in this case used for both the sound values, and for the meanings:
The reading いちじく is thought to be an irregular rendering of the Middle Chinese 映日果 (ʔˠiæŋH ȵiɪt̚ kuɑX, “fig”), which is from Persian انجیر (anjir, “fig”) + Middle Chinese 果 (kuɑX, “fruit”).
