From  (なな) (ほし) (nanahoshi, literally "seven-starred") + 天道虫 (てんとうむし) (tentōmushi, ladybug, ladybird). The kanji are jukujikun (熟字訓), borrowed from Chinese 七星瓢蟲. (Can this(+) etymology be sourced?)
