Etymology
From Old Japanese.
Originally a compound of 五十 (i, “fifty”, combining form) + 鈴 (suzu, “bell”).[1][2]
The Old Japanese term 五十 was often read as iso in isolation, but realized as simply i in compounds.[1] Compare the surname 五十嵐 (Igarashi).
