Etymology[edit]

Compound of (koto, different, separate) +‎ (ama, heaven, ancient compounding reading) +‎ (tsu, ancient possessive particle) +‎ (kami, god, spirit).

The use of to spell koto is an example of semantic jukujikun (熟字訓). The use of to spell the particle tsu is an example of phonetic ateji (当て字).
