Etymology[edit]

From Middle Chinese 動悸 (MC duwngX gjwijH, literally “move + palpitate”). First attested in Japanese in 1721, in a street theater play referencing a line from the fifth-century Chinese text, 後漢書／后汉书 (Hòuhànshū, “Book of the Later Han”).[1]

Does not appear to be related to phonosemantic and onomatopoeic root どき (doki).
