Etymology

Originally a compound of 姬 (pi₁me₁, “princess → woman, girl”) +‎ の (no₂, possessive particle) +‎ 遊び (aso₁bi₁, “play, playing”, the 連用形 (ren'yōkei, “stem or continuative form”) of verb 遊ぶ (aso₁bu), “to play, enjoy”).

Due to absence of vowel clusters in most Old Japanese terms, the の (no₂) and あ (a) of aso₁bi₁ fused into な (na).
