Etymology[edit]

Originally a compound of (pi1me1, princesswoman, girl) +‎ (no2, possessive particle) +‎ 遊び (aso1bi1, play, playing, the 連用形 (ren'yōkei, stem or continuative form) of verb 遊ぶ (aso1bu), “to play, enjoy).

Due to absence of vowel clusters in most Old Japanese terms, the (no2) and (a) of aso1bi1 fused into (na).
