Reborrowing transliterated from Manchu ᠪᠠᡴᠰᡳ (baksi, “scholar”), from Middle Chinese 博士 (pwɑk̚ d͡ʒɨX, “principal teacher in the National University”).
Compare 把式 (bǎshì, “martial arts; master”), 把戲/把戏 (bǎxì, “circus tricks; cheap tricks”).
