Etymology[edit]

Literally, "giving a person fish is not as good as giving a person (the technique of) fishing". The words for "fish" ( ()) and "fishing" ( ()) have been homophonic since Old Chinese, both derived from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-ŋja (fish).
