Glyph origin[edit]
Ideogrammic compound (會意/会意) : 气 (“gas”) + ⿰丿丨 (“two”). Also a phono-semantic compound (形聲/形声) , where ⿰丿丨, variant of 刀 (dāo), acts as the phonetic component. Compare 氕 (“protium”) and 氚 (“tritium”).
Etymology[edit]
From 刀 (dāo) from the glyph, possibly influenced by New Latin deuterium.
