Glyph origin[edit]
Ideogrammic compound (會意/会意) : 气 (“gas”) + 川 (“three”). Also a phono-semantic compound (形聲/形声) , where 川 (chuān) acts as the phonetic component. Compare 氕 (“protium”) and 氘 (“deuterium”).
Etymology[edit]
From 川 (chuān) from the glyph, possibly influenced by New Latin tritium. In Mandarin, it is pronounced in the first tone by analogy with 氕 (piē, “protium”) and 氘 (dāo, “deuterium”).
