Glyph origin

Ideogrammic compound (會意会意) : (gas) + (three). Also a phono-semantic compound (形聲形声) , where (chuān) acts as the phonetic component. Compare (“deuterium”) and (“tritium”).

Etymology

From (chuān) from the glyph, possibly influenced by New Latin tritium. In Mandarin, it is pronounced in the first tone by analogy with (piē, “protium”) and (dāo, “deuterium”).
