Etymology[edit]
From 宙 (chū, “mid-air”) + 飛 (hi, “to fly”), in reference to its flight behavior. Compare the derivation of 鵟 (nosuri).
The kanji spelling is from 沢 (“marsh”) and 鵟 (“buzzard”), referring to its preferred habitat.
