Etymology
[edit]Unknown, but the same as 海人 (ama, “male diver”). The kanji spelling is jukujikun (熟字訓).
Possibly from Proto-Japonic *amay compare Old Japanese: 雨 (“rain”), 天 (ame2, ama, “sky”)
