Phrase consisting of (さる) (saru, monkey) + (mo, even, also) + () (ki, tree) + から (kara, from) + ()ちる (ochiru, to fall).[1][2][3] Literally, even monkeys fall from trees.

First cited to a text from 1638.[4]
