Etymology[edit]

Adverb ‎(ani, rhetorical interrogative) + the irrealis of verb 図る ‎(hakaru, to think) + suppositional particle ‎(-n) (from -m, from -mu) + interrogative particle ‎(ya). Literally "(just) how could one think (such a thing so)?".
