Etymology

Simplified from 銘 (釒 → 钅).

In current form Phono-semantic compound (形聲／形声) : semantic 钅 (“metal”) + phonetic 名 (OC *meŋ) – engrave in metal. Note that 名 means “name”, hence connotations of “engrave a name in metal”.
