Glyph origin

[edit]

Originates from China, possibly a variant of . It appears in the Longkan Shoujian as being pronounced as (MC law|lawX|lawH) or (MC law|lawH). Often mistaken for a 国字(こくじ) (kokuji), the ゆり (yuri) and しなたり (shinatari) readings are instead an instance of 国訓(こっくん) (kokkun).[1][2]

Folk etymology claims that it was coined by Date Tsunamura when he was looking out at the sea through the gate of Dainenji Temple in Sendai;[3] however, the character greatly predates him.
