Etymology
[edit]Appears to be an orthographic borrowing from Chinese 驢馬 / 驴马, first attested in Japanese in the late 1400s.[1]
While the donkey has been known in Japan since antiquity, it seems it was never an important part of Japanese culture. The oldest likely mention was of an 兎馬 (usagiuma, literally “rabbit-horse”), interpreted as referring to a donkey for their longer ears.
Pronunciation
[edit]Noun
[edit]- a donkey (domestic animal)
Usage notes
[edit]- As with many terms that name organisms, this term is often spelled in katakana, especially in biological contexts (where katakana is customary), as ロバ (roba).
