The adjective sense was originally from Min Nan 龜毛 (ku-mo͘, “turtle fur”). It was most likely a reference to 龜毛兔角／龟毛兔角 ("an impossibility", literally "turtle fur and rabbit horns"), a Buddhist metaphor that describes hollow logic.
