Etymology[edit]

The adjective sense was originally from Min Nan 龜毛 ‎(ku-mo͘, turtle fur). It was most likely a reference to 龜毛兔角龟毛兔角 ("an impossibility", literally "turtle fur and rabbit horns"), a Buddhist metaphor that describes hollow logic.
