Etymology 1[edit]

First attested in the Worin seokbo (月印釋譜 / 월인석보), 1459, as Middle Korean 다히다 (Yale: tahita).

This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.
Particularly: “Are all of the listed senses really from MK tahita? If so, how did such divergent senses evolve?”

Pronunciation[edit]

  • (SK Standard/Seoul) IPA(key): [ˈtɛ(ː)da̠] ~ [ˈte̞(ː)da̠]
  • Phonetic hangul: [(ː)/(ː)]
    • Though still prescribed in Standard Korean, most speakers in both Koreas no longer distinguish vowel length.
