First attested in the Worin seokbo (月印釋譜 / 월인석보), 1459, as 덥다 (Yale: tepta). Possible cognates include Manchu ᡨᡠᠸᠠ ‎(tuwa, fire), and Japanese 灯す ‎(tomosu, to light).
