Etymology 1

First attested in the Sinjeon jachwi yeomchobang eonhae (新傳煮取焰硝方諺解 / 신전자취염초방언해), 1635, as Early Modern Korean 마초다 (Yale: machwota). Equivalent to 맞— (mat-, “to fit, to match”) + —추— (-chu-, causative suffix).
