First attested in the Beophwagyeong Eonhae (법화경언해), 1463, as Middle Korean 밧돕 (pastwop) Also attested in the Gugeupbang eonhae (救急方諺解 / 구급방언해), 1466, as Middle Korean 밠톱 (Yale: palsthwop). Also attested in the Dusi Eonhae (두시언해), 1481, as Middle Korean 바톱 (pathwop). From (bal) +‎ (top) (also found in 손톱 (sontop, “fingernail”)).
