Korean[edit]
Etymology[edit]
From Early Modern Korean 열ᄆᆡ (yelmoy), 열매 (yelmay).
Displaced Middle Korean 여름〮 (yèlúm, “fruit”), a nominalization of 열〯다〮 (yěltá, “to ripen”), due to normal sound changes transforming 녀름〮 (nyèlúm, “summer”) into the homophone 여름 (yelum, “summer”).[1]
Pronunciation[edit]
- (SK Standard/Seoul) IPA(key): [jʌ̹ɭmɛ] ~ [jʌ̹ɭme̞]
- Phonetic hangul: [열매/열메]
