πΌπ΄π»
Gothic
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Germanic *mΔlΔ . In the Gothic Bible translated by Ulfilas, the Greek word ΟΟΟΞ½ΞΏΟ (khrΓ³nos), meaning βtimeβ or βduration,β is rendered as πΌπ΄π» (mΔl). This Gothic term carries the sense of a fixed period or appointed time. By contrast, in the Latin Vulgate, Jerome consistently translates ΟΟΟΞ½ΞΏΟ as tempus, the standard Latin word for βtime.β

Usage notes
[edit]In the Gothic Bible, Ulfilas renders the Greek ΟΟΟΞ½ΞΏΟ with three different words depending on nuance: πΌπ΄π» (mΔl), ππ΄πΉπ»π° (Ζeila), and occasionally πΎπ΄π (jΔr). The normal distinction is that πΌπ΄π» refers to an appointed or fixed period, often a longer or significant stretch of time, as seen in Mark 9:21; Luke 1:57; Luke 8:27; Luke 8:29; Luke 4:5; John 14:9. By contrast, ππ΄πΉπ»π° denotes a shorter span or βa while,β as in Mark 2:19; Luke 18:4; John 12:35; John 7:33. The use of πΎπ΄π, which normally means βyear,β is exceptional: in Luke 20:9 Ulfilas chose πΎπ΄π to translate ΟΟΟΞ½ΞΏΟ, showing a rare case where he rendered βtimeβ as a concrete unit rather than a general duration. Thus, while πΌπ΄π» and ππ΄πΉπ»π°are the standard Gothic equivalents of ΟΟΟΞ½ΞΏΟ, πΎπ΄π stands out as a contextβdriven and unusual translation choice.
