Borrowed from Khitan 𘱿𘲫 (*qid ún) or Khitan 𘱿𘱤 (*qid i). Cognate with Middle Chinese 契丹 (MC khejH|khj+t|khet tan, “Khitans”) and Mongolian Кидан (Kidan). More at Khitan.
