Etymology
[edit]Orthographic borrowing from Sumerian 𒈗 (lugal, “king”), with a phonetic complement 𒍑 (-uš). From Proto-Indo-European *h₂émsus, from *h₂ems- (“to give birth”). Cognate with Vedic Sanskrit असुर (ásura, “spirit, lord”) and Avestan 𐬀𐬵𐬎𐬭𐬀 (ahura, “lord”). For a semantic parallel of the shift from "to beget" to "king," compare Proto-Germanic *kuningaz (“king”), from Proto-Indo-European *ǵenh₁- (“to beget”).
