Etymology

[edit]

From Proto-Indo-European *h₂yu-gʷih₃- (long life) or Proto-Indo-European *h₁su-gʷih₃- (good life) with -ής (-ḗs, adjective suffix); the former derivation is favored by Beekes and Weiss. In that case, cognate with Latin iūgis, Avestan 𐬫𐬀𐬎𐬎𐬀𐬈𐬘𐬍 (yauuaejī), Proto-Germanic *aiwukiz.[1]
