Etymology

From imperfective lengthening of the perfective Proto-Slavic stem *-mьr- (cf. first singular *mьrǫ of *merti) + -а́ть (-átʹ). Similar lengthening accounts for the change -о--а- in imperfective derivations in -ывать (-yvatʹ) and -ивать (-ivatʹ), e.g.
