Usage notes

This noun only appears in possessed forms, but the possessive forms vary by dialect, usually featuring an additional initial consonant /n/, /b/, or /Ɂ/. Thus the third person singular possessed form ('his/her/its mother') is ubaan in the Central and Lower dialects, baan in the Western dialect, and unaan in the Mentasta dialect. Meanwhile, the first person plural possessed form ('our mother') is neʼaan in the Central, Lower, and Western dialects and nenaan in Mentasta.

Blackfoot

Etymology

Possibly derived from a reduced form of Proto-Algonquian *akwina·ni (“clothing”), or completely inherited from Proto-Algonquian *-a·ni if surface analysed as *akwin- (“to wear”) + *a·ni.

This is possible due to Cree inheriting both *akwina·ni and *akwin- as akwanân (“shawl”) and akonêw (“to wear”) respectively.
